Our breakfast this morning :)

We eat this for breakfast more than anything else...Oatmeal! It is ideal because it takes so little time to prepare...in fact it takes far longer to dish out than it does to make it :) And it costs very little, so the children can have full tummies without Daddy having an empty wallet. :)

Here is our basic recipe~ I don't measure anything...I just do it by sight. I fill up a large pot with water and bring it to a boil. (While it is boiling, I am free to do other things). Once the water boils, I add 2 bags of oatmeal, some vanilla, and sweeten the pot with sugar or honey (we prefer to use honey when it is available). I add the oatmeal slowly stirring with a wire wisk the whole time to prevent clumps (or as Josiah says, "Bumps"). I turn the heat down to low and let is simmer for a while. The children love it when I add a can of evaporated milk (they say it makes it creamier). Sometimes, we add other things we have on hand...raisins, cinnamon, chopped apples ect... Yum!

  1. Hi Jaynee, Thanks for stopping in and your words of encouragment. We did have a nice day!!! Wow, I think you all might exceed our ideas od fun...knife throwing!!!! I am not going to tell the boys about that!!!! Your doing a great job managing your home, the meals are healthy and filling. Keep up the good work. Many blessings to you all!!! Cindy and the crew!

  2. Hello, Jaynee! I'm a new reader who's been enjoying your posts a lot! You do well to post so often! (I have a hard time posting regularly.) I was born in Mexico to 2nd generation Mennonite missionaries in Chihuahua state (but only lived there 2 years that time.) I was there again for a summer as a young adult. Now my parents are about to leave us here (Canada) and move to Colima.

I never thought of putting vanilla in oatmeal. Sounds so luxurious! Do you add milk to each bowl after, like I assume 'everyone does', or only the evaporated? I look forward to seeing some of your other meals. I like to cook simple and filling food, too.

My brother, with 8 kids, also does knife throwing - but only with the older boys! However last time I saw them doing it, we were all watching nearby. Perhaps not so different from your style! LOL

I love all your photos - because your kids never seem to get grumpy like mine do!

    Bless you so much

  3. Natalia~ My hubby and some of the children like to add regular milk too if we have it on hand...if not, they just eat it like that :)
